Langkawi is an archipelago of 99 islands set just 30km off the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The main island is Pulau Langkawi and its accommodation options tend to occupy the luxury end of the scale: think teak villas and beautifully embellished traditional huts with chandelier showerheads, silk sheets, Wi-Fi. The main settlement at Pulau Langkawi is in the dusty town of Kuah (the best place for duty-free shopping), while Pantai Tengah, Pantai Cenang, Padang Matsirat, Pantai Kok, Tanjung Rhu and Datai Bay mainly play host to upmarket resorts. Burau Bay
This stunning beach lined with rocky outcrops is located at the West Coast of Langkawi. Several world-class hotels operate in this area which offers a peaceful and tranquil environment for relaxation and quiet meditation. The near-by Burau island is also a roosting place for migratory birds – a treasure trove for bird-watchers.
Payar Island
A collection of four islands about 35 km (22 miles) south of Langkawi, the waters around the marine park is a dazzling display of corals and aquatic species such as moray eels, rock groupers, black-tip sharks and clown fish (think Nemo). The island is a fantastic place for diving or snorkeling. Land-lubbers who don’t want to set foot in the water can ride in boats with transparent fiberglass bottoms to watch the life below.
