Langkawi Craft Complex

Pantai Kok Attractions

Langkawi Craft Complex is a tourist complex that has exhibits on traditional Malaysian handicrafts, plus it conducts demonstrations on crafts-making methods such as weaving, batik painting, wood carving and plaiting. 21km from Kuah, it is located just past Pantai Pasir Hitam (Black Sand Beach).

Local Legends

There are several ‘museums’ on site at the Langkawi Craft Complex including the Royal Museum, Islamic Museum and Heritage Museum. However, it is the Museum of History and Legends that attracts most visitors: there is a special section here dedicated to the legend of Mahsuri with beautiful displays highlighting her story.

Displays at the complex range from forest-based products, local fabrics, ceramics and metal artefacts to unique objects representing Malaysia’s various ethnic groups. However, it is the range of striking, hand-drawn silk batik and songket (a type of brocade textile) interwoven with gold and silver threads that is truly impressive; watching the artisans create works of art from simple fabrics is impressive.

Besides the crafts-making demonstrations, visitors can also buy traditional Malaysian products or crafts at the Langkawi Craft Complex’s sales gallery. The gorgeous silverware, brass ware and baskets of rattan, mengkuang and pandan leaves are especially great holiday souvenirs.

Due to the centre’s out-of-the-way location it would be easiest to join a tour to visit but if you would rather explore on your own then catch a cab from Kuah.
