Wat Koh Wanararm Langkawi

Buddhist Temple near Kuah

Wat Koh Wanararm Langkawi is a hidden Thai Buddhist temple just outside Kuah Town and you can explore its grounds for free. Located on Bukit Putih, it was founded in the year 2000 after the local Buddhist community received the blessing of renowned Thai monk Luang Por Khun.

The temple grounds contain a main prayer hall with a large golden statue of Buddha sitting behind a colourful mural of a Bodhi tree. There are also several smaller statues and paintings surrounding the main statue. Outside, visitors can find eight Tibetan stupas painted in gold and white, where devotees can be seen praying to make merit.

Wat Koh Wanararm Langkawi’s landscaped garden is surrounded by a lush rainforest and limestone hills, one of which has a massive marble statue of Kuan Yin. Completed in 2014, it’s one of the more breathtaking carvings of the Goddess of Mercy. She is depicted in a flowing gown, with a willow branch on her right hand and a jar of water on her left.

The temple is also home to three schools, where you can learn about the three most prominent types of Buddhism, Theravada (Thai), Vajrayana (Himalayan), and Mahayana Buddhism (Chinese). Open daily, parking and entrance to Wat Koh Wanararm Langkawi are free of charge. Donations are highly welcomed though, as contributions provide funds for maintenance and expansion of the temple.
