Backofen Restaurant

When you’re in the Pantai Cenang area, Backofen is one of the restaurants that should be on your must-visit list. Boasting a great mix of East-meets-West fare; try the signature bratwurst as well as the grilled lamb at this German restaurant. During the Christmas season this place is packed almost everyday; the food is reasonably-priced and service is great.

Featuring a spa at the back of the restaurant, service at this eatery is pretty average.

La Sal

A dining room set within Casa del Mar Resort along Jalan Pantai Cenang, La Sal is a fine dining restaurant where you will find local food inspired by Mediterranean flavours and the local catch. We recommend the tangy, spicy barbecued tandoori chicken skewers – the meat is melt-in-your-mouth tender and succulent: paired with the fluffy, buttery naan bread, this dish is certainly comforting and makes a visit here worthwhile. What’s more, the restaurant also deserves high proise for its attentive service – although they are not too knowledgeable about wine selections, wait staff members more than make up for it with their cheerful, efficient service.

Little India Cuisine

At the end of Pantai Cenang is Little India Cuisine restaurant; featuring plastic tables and chairs and a warm and sticky atmosphere this converted garage is a good place for northern Indian and vegetarian cuisine. There is a stretch of Pantai Cenang that is especially jam-packed with restaurants and souvenir stores and this is where you’ll find the brightly-lit Orkid Ria. Papadam Ria Indian Restaurant

A favourite among Langkawi locals, Pappadam Ria’s kitchen sure knows how to prepare Indian food in a way that both satisfies and caters to a wide range of food preferences. Taking pride in delivering the authentic experience, they focus on North and South Indian region dishes, so whether you are craving a creamy curry, spicy, vegetable-filled samosa or outstanding vegetarian options, you are sure to be satisfied.

Though it only opened its doors in 2013, it has gone on to cement its reputation as one of the island’s best Indian restaurants: we recommend the dry kadai chicken (an expert combination of juicy chicken chunks with piquant capsicums and spices), and Mysore rogan josh (a brilliant red curry dish of braised mutton slices, flavoured with onions, creamy yoghurt, tangy garlic, ginger and spices). All in all, a meal here is sure to be a satisfying one.

Red Tomato Splash Beach Café

This particular tomato is quite difficult to locate – the entrance is shaded by trees and the flanking buildings seem to dwarf it. Run by expats, it serves some of the best western food on the island. The interior is jungle-green and fire-engine red; the pizzas are especially tasty and the prices are pretty reasonable. Try the toasted sandwiches and bruschetta; the pleasant staff will serve you anything from the breakfast menu all day long as long as the eatery isn’t too crowded.

The Brasserie

An airy al fresco dining room featuring an on-the-beach location with raw design focusing on ageing timber, white tents, umbrellas and chairs, The Brasserie certainly makes for a romantic dinner spot, impressing immensely with its casual elegance. We love the fact that the kitchen always seems to be pushing unique ideas, making them very easily chart toppers in Langkawi’s culinary game.

The Mediterranean-inspired cuisine at this 130-pax restaurant is simple marvellous: we highly recommend its Angus steak, a hearty portion of melt-on-the-tongue meat, heavily marbled with unrivalled sweetness and tenderness. To keep you company while you have your meal are trip hop, jazz fusion and instrumental rock tunes.

The Cliff

For fine dining with unbeatable views, The Cliff is certainly a winner. In total it can seat up to 220 people, with three sections – an indoor dining room, bar and al fresco garden. A polished outfit with decor that is classical and very elegant (think buffed wood floors, white plastic bucket chairs and white cloth-covered tables), its ambiance is casual and comfortable.

The kitchen, helmed by award-winning local chef Khairul, puts out beautifully-executed, authentic Malay dishes that are rich in flavour and impress us with their simplicity. Standouts on this side of the menu include The Cliff’s traditional beef rendang – tender, succulent braised beef chunks, marinated with galangal, ginger, lemongrass, turmeric, chilli paste and kerisik leaves. There are also western meals available, with steaks and seafood featuring prominently.

Tomato Nasi Kandar

This restaurant is known as one of the cheapest places in Langkawi for excellent fare at cheap prices; locals swear by this eatery, filled with plastic tables and chairs, and it certainly doesn’t disappoint. The 24-hour joint serves up tasty food no matter the hour; food is always fresh and although the outside seating area is as hot as blue blazes, the food makes the agony worthwhile.

Proudly marching to its own beat, the quirky and vibrant Yellow Café is a beach bar that certainly stands out for its hip and unpretentious décor, with chairs, walls and even hammocks in varying shades of yellow. Servers are a chatty bunch and there is a very hippie-like atmosphere with guests lounging around in board shorts and bikinis, and the fun vibe and colourful interior design is not the only reason to visit – the food here is, simply put, fantastic.

The menu, which focuses in western classic like steaks, pizzas and pastas, mixes bold and rich flavours to create dishes that are hearty and comforting. We highly recommend the steaks – these wonderful T-bones and sirloins have great complexity of flavour that will live long in your memory. Read More...
