Where and What to Eat in Pantai Tengah

Pantai Tengah’s restaurants will keep you as busy as a beaver, and just as hungry. Like Pantai Cenang, it boasts more than a few good restaurants. The area may not be as developed as Pantai Cenang – sidewalks are a luxury and the roadside is frequently muddy – but the beach is the longest in Langkawi. There are frequent expanses of grassy plots of land and abandoned projects are a dime a dozen here but Pantai Tengah also has its charms – the area is quiet and shaded by lots of trees so walking along the sidewalks is not too much of a chore.

Pantai Tengah practically has zero sightseeing attractions and day-time activities are scarce.

Boom Boom Corner View Restaurant

Shaded by a bright red canopy and located at the junction of Jalan Pantai Tengah and Jalang Pantai Cenang, Boom Boom Corner is the place to sample some authentic Indian/Pakistani fare. Service is prompt and the interior is dimly lit by red lights. Specialties include roti bom, naan, tandoori chicken and briyani rice as well as the teh tarik.

  • Opening Hours: 18:00 – 22:30

Chinese Kung Fu Restaurant

Close by to Hoya's Cafe is The Eagle's Nest, found north along the way to Pantai Cenang. A small restaurant with a garden concept, this is a great place to unwind after a day of fun and sightseeing. With an intimate feel, there are very few things that are more pleasant than watching the stars appearing in the darkening sky as you enjoy your meal.

Fat Mum's Seafood Restaurant

Known as one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Pantai Tengah area, Fat Mum’s has fresh seafood cooked in a variety of different ways; the best thing about the food here is the fact that it tastes delightfully home-cooked. The menu also includes a selection of Western cuisine; try the noodles-on-fire, the spicy garlic lobster and the butter prawns.

Kantan

This traditional Malay-style restaurant looks like a super-sized kampung house; the menu is an upscale and less spicy execution of traditional Malay dishes such as rendang and creamy-coconut curry fish. The courtyard boasts a beautifully decorated pond and fountain with lush greenery and a scattering of earthen pots all over the place. Try the Langkawi Malay-style juicy tenderloin beef and potato wedges stir-fried with dark soy sauce and spices and udang kebab serai – grilled prawns skewered on lemon grass stems.

PaPa Iranian Restaurant

Serving up a variety of Iranian cuisine, PaPa Restaurant – located at the beginning of Pantai Tengah – may not look like much from the outside. The interior is lit by fluorescent lights and the service is not truly welcoming but if you’ve had enough of seafood and Western fare, then grab an outdoor table at this eatery and dig into the kebabs.

  • Address: No.3, Pantai Tengah
  • Cuisine: Middle-Eastern
  • Price Range: Affordable

Sheela's Restaurant

This German-Malaysian restaurant serves international and local fare; the freshly-squeezed juices are especially refreshing. The walls are adorned with artworks made by Malaysian-German artist Lars; food prices are relatively reasonable. Try the white wine-soaked lobster, potato salad and the charcoal-grilled sirloin steak.

SunSutra

The fabulously avant garde SunSutra is a posh restaurant along Pantai Tengah flanked by two clubs – Sunba Retro Bar and SunKarma. Boasting a wonderfully extensive menu of fusion cuisine that is competitively priced, you’re more likely to have a nice night out here than at one of the hotel restaurants; try the chocolate molten lava cake – it’s simply out-of-this-world.

Serving a wide range of breakfast delights, sandwiches and salads in big portions, highly recommended are Troppo Co’s signature General Issimo beef sandwiches, full butter croissants, as well as the mango and banana pancakes. Open from 09:00 to 17:00, this retro-looking beach cafe has a laidback vibe, perfect for a quiet breakfast by the beach.

Tulsi Garden Restaurant & Bar prides itself in preparing every dish from scratch, with freshly ground spices and home baked Naan bread. Signature dishes include Tulsi Garden lobster and Curry Madras (lamb cooked in curry paste). Vegetarians will delight in the restaurant’s rather extensive menu, ranging from mutter paneer (peas and farmer's cheese in tomato-based sauce) to jeera aloo (potatoes with cumin seeds).
