Padang Matsirat Shopping

Where to Shop and What to Buy in Padang Matsirat

Atma Alam Batik Village Shopping

Padang Matsirat does not have many duty-free stores or giant modern shopping centres; the airport is one place where you can get an assortment of traditional souvenirs, handicrafts and batik prints. Another place to get your retail-fix is the Atma Alam Batik Village where you can get some locally designed batik prints at affordable prices and the roadside to the Field of Burnt Rice also has a string of colourful hawker stalls lining the sidelines. The Teow Soon Huat shopping mall is a large complex selling a wide assortment of merchandise ranging from apparel to confectionary but truthfully it’s quite a distance away from Padang Matsirat and almost inhabits the borders of Kuah.

Field of Burnt Rice

Field of Burnt Rice

The site of a mass-paddy burning spree conducted by Langkawi’s inhabitants when the Siamese invaded in 1821, the roadside leading up to the Field is actually a good place to get some reasonably priced souvenirs, batik prints and kitschy knick knacks. Merchandise may not be of the highest quality but the colourful stalls are almost impossible to resist.

Langkawi International Airport

Langkawi International Airport

The airport is a probably the best place to hunt for duty-free goods in the Padang Matsirat area especially if you’re not in the mood to go bargain-hunting in cramped and humid roadside stalls. Another plus note to airport-shopping is that it can be done at the last minute – however the best place to buy duty-free items is still Kuah.
