Langkawi’s Top Restaurants for Local Dishes

The best local restaurants in Langkawi offer a combination of charming Malaysian hospitality, open-air seating, laidback ambience, and delicious homemade dishes at a fraction of the price you’d pay at more renowned (and overhyped) restaurants. Great for savouring authentic local dishes such as nasi lemak, grilled seafood, and a variety of curries, these family-owned eateries utilise recipes that were handed down through generations.

As Langkawi caters to a global clientele, you can find a wide range of unique culinary delights here, from Thailand and Japan to Spain and France, as well as the Middle East.  However, Langkawi is famed for serving some of the best local delicacies in the country, where authentic Malay and Chinese cuisine as well as fresh seafood such as crabs, lobsters, squid, and king prawns are served in open-air restaurants by the roadside. The only downside to these eateries is that they can be difficult to spot as there are hardly any signage to point you in the right direction, so we’ve compiled a guide of Langkawi’s top restaurants for local dishes and where to find them.

    Maya Seafood Restaurant

Located on Langkawi’s quiet Pantai Tengah beach, Maya Seafood Restaurant is a family-owned eatery that specialises in authentic Malay and Thai cuisine. Standout dishes include the chicken curry, grilled snapper, seafood tom yam, and fried calamari. Not only is the owner very friendly and fluent in English, she’s more than happy to prepare dishes according to your preference. Unlike most restaurants in Langkawi, Maya Seafood Restaurant does not serve alcohol, but you are free to bring your own wine or beer without corkage charges.

    Restoran Siti Fatimah

Restoran Siti Fatimah is one of Langkawi’s oldest restaurants, serving northern-Malay cuisine in an open buffet setting. Set in a quiet neighbourhood called Kawasan Mata Air, locals usually flock to this eatery during lunch, where they can choose from over 50 Malay dishes such as fried sambal fish, coconut chicken curry, fried chicken, gulai ikan talang masin (salted fish curry), and papaya salad. The price ranges from RM5 to RM10 for a plate of rice and three side dishes, making it one of the most affordable restaurants in Langkawi. As it can get very packed in the afternoon, we highly recommend going to Restoran Siti Fatimah at 11:00 when food is freshly prepared.

Restoran Haji Ali Nasi Kandar Asli

True to its name, Restoran Haji Ali Nasi Kandar Asli’s speciality lies within its steamed white rice and wide assortment of Malay-Indian side dishes. This open-air restaurant is furnished with simple plastic tables and chairs while side dishes such as fried chicken and seafood as well as lamb and mutton curries are laid out in a buffet spread. Diners can also enjoy fried noodles, tandoori chicken, and several types of naan breads fresh from the oven. For drinks, we highly recommend the teh tarik, which is a mixture of black tea and condensed milk poured between two glasses, resulting in a smooth texture and a thick frothy top.
